Kirtan Academy

Established in the kirtan capital of the world Sri Mayapur Dham, the Kirtan Academy is the world’s first educational institution focusing solely on the Holy Name. Desiring to revive a real brahminical standard of education, for the last three years, we had not set any fixed educational fee but rather encouraged everyone to contribute according to their means and level of gratitude. We have had to review this approach as there is a deep imprint that links commitment to expenses incurred.

The registration fee is Rs 1000 (US$18), before Kartik starts, Rs 2000 (US$36) after that.
Course itself is Rs 6,000 (US$100) for two months including both mrdanga, kartal and harmonium classes.

Instruments are not included but required. Starting price for Harmonium around Rs5,000 and Rs3,000 for mrdanga. Small good kartals are Rs 250.

The next Kirtan Academy course starts on Nov. 23rd 2017, graduation is on Jan 26th as part of a kirtan mela in Ekachakra Dham which ends on Jan 30th. Register today.

Our Vision…

Following the annual Gaur Purnima Kirtan Mela’s popularity, we have been wondering what would be the best way to serve the devotees, assist them in deepening their chanting, increasing their attraction and attachment to the holy name. It was concluded by our team that more education on the glories of the holy name, immersion in lila and music tuitions would greatly complement each other towards better chanting. Having this in mind we launched Kirtan Academy in Sridham Mayapur in December 2013.

The spirit of the academy is one of “living education”. Practice and application of the philosophy are important parts of the curriculum.

The philosophy part of the curriculum, Nama Tattva, is taught by very senior speakers such as HH Sacinandana Swami, HH Kadamba Kanana Swami, Mahatma prabhu and other illustrious senior vaisnavas. Each day consists of seminar presentations on different writings of previous acharyas, always with a focus on the Holy Name. On Chanting Hare Krishna (ACBSP), Harinam Cintamani, Bhajan Rahasya, Nama Bhajan, Manah Siksa, sections of Caitanya Caritamrta, Srimad Bhagavatam and others.

The  study of bhajans, prayers and their deep purports and meanings is also an important part. Songs of Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktivinode Thakur, Srila Narottama das Thakur …

The narrations of the pastimes of the Lord, “Lila Kirtan” at original locations whenever possible, is a regular part of the syllabus. Gaura Lila, Krishna Lila, Vaisnava lila, History of Gaudhiya Vaisnava kirtan culture over the past 500 years…

Students are guided by experienced devotees as they learn to organize their own Nama Yajnas, 64 round days, extended kirtan program, Lila Kirtan night… They will also are given an opportunity to assist in the International Kirtan Mela in Mayapur as a learning experience.

There are daily classes on mrdanga, kartals, harmonium and voice training, so that our offerings to the Lord may become most pleasing. We gather regularly either at community events or programs organized by the academy students wherein kirtan is the focus. These provides further practice for the students.

The ancient system of education as described in our sastra speaks of daksine, not school fees. In order to make it easier on everyone to understand what is needed from them financial to make the program viable, we have set the daksine to a minimum of Rs 6,000 for the course. This includes parikrama travelling fees, required books, accommodations and prasadam while on extended parikrama, access to a few academy harmoniums.

Having your own instrument is HIGHLY recommended in regards to harmonium and absolutely necessary in regards to mrdanga and kartals.

mridanga

We make 1st class instruments available to students at wholesale prices, Rs 3000-4000 for mrdangas and from Rs 5,000 for small portable or Harinam harmonium and up to Rs 20,000 or more for bigger, scale changers etc…

There is possibility to apply for scholarship if cost of course is prohibitive.

The mother organization “Kirtan Foundation” receives donations of well-wishers either as a regular percentage of their income or as a one time or occasional donation. In this way grihastas may have an opportunity to sponsor Holy Name Projects such as Kirtan Academy, International Kirtan Melas, Kirtan Village or other similar events pr projects.

Formal opening of the Mayapur Kirtan Academy was on December 6th 2013.

Next series of classes start on Nov. 23rd 2017. Registration is open from June 1st 2017. Prior registration is helpful so that we can properly prepare for the students that will be attending.
